Where are the so-called decent and respectable people of St. Kitts and Nevis?

2/19/2010

By: Earle Clarke

Dear Reader, before I go into the subject matter, I would like to point out two incidents – (1), I was driving my car, when an old school mate of mine stopped me and told me that he is a regular reader of my column. The last article I wrote on cheating, gave him some doubts, especially when I mentioned about Washie proclaiming that PAM was formed for the working class.

In my article, I mentioned about the introduction of Free Secondary Education into St. Kitts-Nevis by the then Labour Administration of Mr. Robert Bradshaw and I quoted what the Democrat Newspaper had to say. My school mate said that he called a few school mates of ours who lived here at the time and he was told that Earle is correct and he has not said it all.

My friend told me that he does not want to see Washie and he does not want to hear anything that he says.

Dear Reader, I always try my endeavour to live up to the motto of this newspaper in which I write – “Sound speech which cannot be condemned. Titus 2:8. I did not attend the small church in George Street which I normally attend on Sunday mornings at 7, because I was invited to attend another church at 10 and they were going to serve Valentine Lunch.

Before I could leave for that church, I received numerous calls from members of my church complaining that a local preacher Oliver Spencer turned the pulpit into a political rostrum, simply because Dr Earl Asim Martin attended the service.

Dr. Martin has been attending that church since 1992 and Mr. Spencer has seen him in church before Sunday gone, and has shaken his hands before. So what could have caused Brother Spencer to launch a political tirade on Sunday? Is it because the old guard was called out to assist in the snatching of election victory from Labour and they failed, so brother Spencer is annoyed to the point that, upon seeing Dr. Martin, instead of feeding the congregation with Spiritual Food, he suffocated them with political diatribe?

Should persons who go on political platforms be allowed to take official positions in the church? Are they not a dividing force in the church instead of being a unity agent? Could brother Sidney who saw Labour dogs at a PAM political meeting, stretch forth his hand in earnestness and give me the peace which passeth all understanding? Can I, as a Labour supporter enter the church when Brother Spencer is preaching again?

On more than one occasion I have shaken his hand when he preached at my church, for, normally, he is a good preacher. You see, dear reader, a few weeks ago, I wrote an article depicting the People’s Action Movement as a dividing force which, since its inception, has destroyed the church, the lodges, the society, and the neighbourhood.

It has caused rifts within the family. My sisters rejoiced when I, their older brother, was dismissed from Social Security in 1985. Rejoiced! Never once approaching me to proffer sympathy, or to find out how I was making out. Rift right through the family structure. With PAM, which is a divisive force, ripping families apart, how can we blame our youths for their decadence?

When Michael on PAM’s platform could urge young people to lock up their elders in the house if they dare to say that they are voting for Labour, where is the respect for our Senior Citizens? Is it any wonder that our youths curse the biggest Indecent Language in front of Senior Citizens and don’t care? The fabric of our society began crumbling in the 1980’s, when respect for law and order went down the drain.

In 1980, during their victory motorcade, Dr. Simmonds wanted to drive through Fort Thomas Road from East to West, which is against the law, for Fort Thomas Road is a one-way street. Traffic flows from West to East, even for bicycles. The police outrider, sensing what Dr. Simmonds wanted to do, indicate that it was a one-way street. Dr. Simmonds rose out of the vehicle in which he was driving and said to the outrider, “I say drive.” Dr. Simmonds was his boss, so he had to comply with the demands of his boss; total disrespect for law and authority by the new Premier of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Further breakdown of the law was to follow when they completely politicized the Police Force, smashing it up and causing the Officers and men to back-track on their oath - To perform their duties without malice or ill will and without favour.

The son of a PAM supporter was caught stealing hubcaps from a vehicle. The son was arrested; no case was tried on him, but the policeman was transferred to Nevis the next day; breaking up a whole family. When you see some people who occupied high offices and cannot live or work in the land of their birth, do not feel sorry from them. It is their wicked deeds which have caught up with them. Where were the voices of the so-called decent and respectable people in the church on Sunday?

Could they not stand up and tell Brother Spencer that their main purpose for attending church was in order to partake of spiritual food? Did it serve their purpose to hear the Brother belch out his political vomit? Who are they? Are the so-called decent and respectable members holding up the political party of PAM higher than they are lifting up the church of God? Are we paying more loyalty to man than to God? Where standeth we in this hour?

PAM has lost the election. They are five years in the political wilderness without a compass and a leader to lead the way. Their main purpose is to smash up the church which is supposed to be the moral conscience of our society.

In 2004 a local preacher by the name of Sister Browne, went on the pulpit at Wesley Methodist just after the Elections of that year and said “We have a good government, let us pray for it.” What uproar that statement caused from the so-called decent and respectable people in the church. The sister was called in and asked to apologize. I wonder if Brother Spencer would be called in to apologize. Render unto Caesar the things which belong to Caesar and to God, the things which belong to God.

Mr. Glenroy Blanchette went on the PAM platform and openly declared that the Governor General would be fired when PAM attained office. The Governor General does not participate in politics, yet he was attacked by Mr. Blanchette, a Candidate for PAM who is a powder key of hatred, anger, divisiveness and venom. All of a sudden, the funeral undertakers in St. Kitts and Nevis are enjoying a lucrative trade, because, all of our so-called decent inhabitants have died from want of decency.

Nobody from our so-called batch of decent citizens have been bold enough to stand yp and declare that the Governor General should be left out of politics. Are we, the so-called decent and respectable people in the society, not worse than the young gangs who are using guns to kill off each? They are using guns, but our respectable persons or citizens are using hypocrisy and silence. We are upholding the likes of Washie who, last Friday before Valentine’s Day went on WINN FM and said on his programme, “Ask Washie” that in other countries people would have started burning down buildings. Washie is not arrested for “Inciting”, but Douglas is a Dictator; search the dictionary for the meaning of the word dictator.

“Let your light so shine before men so that they can see your good works and glorify your father which is in heaven.” “Ye are the salt of the earth. A city set upon a hill. If the salt has lost its savour, where with shall it be salted?”

The Christians of St. Kitts are losing their lights. Men cannot see them. Their savor has been lost. They cannot season the consciences of men.
