Delphic New Town United: 2011/2012 SKNFA Digicel Premier Division Champions

Delphic New Town United on Saturday night last, June 16th, defeated the Conaree Football team by 2 goals to nil, in the second game of the Best of Three Finals played at Warner Park, Basseterre, to wrap up the series and emerge as the 2011/2012 St.Kitts-Nevis Football Association (SKNFA) Digicel Premier Division Champions.
New Town’s Ian “Rumpy” Lake copped the Player of the Year award; while Rookie of the Year went to Donroy Liburd of Cayon Football Club.
A packed and energized Warner Park crowd, dominated by football fans from the New Town and East Basseterre community was on hand to witness the keenly contested encounter (between these two neighbouring teams).
The goals for New Town were scored by Alexis “Lecky” Saddler in the 4th minute and Ian “Rumpy” Lake in the 80th minute.
The game was very tense from the beginning to the end with Yellow Cards dished out to Mudassa Howe of the Conaree team and Avalin Mc Call of the New Town team; Red cards went to Marvin Charles and Austin Lewis, who was removed from the bench (both came from the Conaree team.)
New Town won the first match of the Best of Three Finals on Wednesday night last week, June 14th, at Warner Park by the same score line (2-nil).
The goals were scored by Ian “Rumpy” Lake in the 25th minute and Shashi Isaac in the 85th minute.
The final encounter of the three match series was scheduled for Wednesday night (June 21st).
Participating in its first Best of Four Play-Offs (and finals), the Conaree FC placed second in the annual competition now in its 13th year.
Front runners in the League, S L Horsfords St. Paul’s placed 3rd and the fourth spot went to UDC Garden Hot Spurs placed 4th.
New Town now takes the lead with five (5) Premier Division Championships under their belt. They last won the competition in the 2009/2010 season. (Two years ago).
Last year’s champions RAM’s Village Superstars have won the tournament four (4) times; S L Horsfords St. Paul’s follows closely behind with three (3) wins and Cayon FC won once.
In a statement made by the SKNFA President, Anthony Johnson, ahead of the Play-Offs and Finals, he disclosed that then overall winner of the competition will receive a cash prize of EC$ 10,000; the second placed team EC$6,000; 3rd- EC$4,000 and 4th- EC$2,000.
He said the association which is providing the money will be making the payments to the teams sometime in the near future.
